Individual study programme

  1. Each student pursues an individual study programme that specifies the set of courses for each semester. The individual study programme for each semester is developed together with and formally approved by the student’s advisor.
  2. When designing their individual study programmes, the students can select courses offered by the Faculty, by the Warsaw University of Technology and by other higher education institutions.
  3. If, for the course taken outside the Faculty, the number of ECTS credit points is not specified in the course description, the points are assigned by the Director of the PhD programme.
  4. The individual study programme in each semester can include a special Individual PhD Reading course taught by the student’s advisor or by any other member of academic staff recommended by the student’s advisor. The Individual PhD Reading course can be assigned up to 6 ECTS credit points, depending on the student’s workload. To pass the course, the student must take an examination (which must include a written part) or submit a report. The documentation of the course (examination problems with student’s answers, report) is kept by the advisor for the period of study. The Individual PhD Reading course can be classified as either advanced or non-advanced course, depending on its content – this must be reflected in the documentation of the course.
  5. The individual study programme in semesters 1-7 must include the Individual PhD Research course. The student’s advisor is an instructor for this course. The Individual PhD Research course is assigned 20 ECTS credit points. To pass the course, the student must submit a report no later than two weeks before the beginning of the next semester. The report is graded by the advisor and by the Director of the PhD programme.
  6. The individual study programme in semesters 1-7 must include the PhD Seminar. The student’s advisor is an instructor for this Seminar. The PhD Seminar is assigned 2 ECTS credit points. To pass the course, the student must give a presentation on the topic related to his/her research. The documentation of the presentation is kept by the advisor for the period of study.

Curriculum requirements

  1. The curriculum requirements are the same for all areas (disciplines) in which the programme is offered. The requirements are given in Table 1.

    Table 1 - Curriculum requirements

      ECTS credit points
Advanced courses in selected area (discipline) 42
    Non-technical courses 6
    Other courses 8
    PhD seminar (Sem1, ..., Sem7) 14
    Individual PhD research (IR1, ..., IR7) 140
    PhD thesis 30
    total: 240
  2. The programme is completed when the curriculum requirements given in Table 1 are satisfied and the submitted PhD Thesis is accepted by the student’s advisor.
  3. Upon admission to the PhD programme, the credit point transfer can be made for students who were enrolled in a PhD programme at some other institution. The transfer is made by the Director of the PhD programme upon recommendation from the student’s advisor.
