Aim of project: This STREP project of the EU 7. Framework Programme aims at a distributed software platform (a middleware) that will facilitate the development of applications destined for cooperating everyday objects in the home environment. The object is assumed to be equipped with an intelligent node featuring a CPU, sensors, actuators, and wireless connectivity. The assumed object deployment model (objects acquired for their main functionality, without any specific plan or order) implies that the target object composition is unknown at the design time. Thus the programmer faces the challenge of using at least partially unknown sensor and actuator resources. The middleware is meant to reduce that challenge.

Expected results: The project expects to achieve the following results: (a) a middleware architecture and mechanisms for opportunistic pervasive computing applications, (b) suitable programming model and API for developing opportunistic pervasive computing applications on top of the middleware, (c) an implementation of the middleware and API on resource constrained nodes, (d) application deployment and monitoring tools, (e) an ontology-driven approach for modeling and flexibly accessing resources for a given application domain, (f) proof-of-concept applications with emphasis in energy saving.
